Integrative Systematics of Cryptic Butterfly Species

Abstract

Cryptic butterfly species -- morphologically indistinguishable taxa that are genetically and reproductively isolated -- represent one of the most significant sources of undescribed biodiversity in the Lepidoptera, with estimates suggesting that 15-35% of nominal butterfly species harbour at least one cryptic lineage. Identifying and characterising these hidden species requires integrative approaches combining molecular phylogenetics, wing pattern analysis by geometric morphometrics, male genitalic dissection, and ecological niche differentiation -- no single method alone being sufficient to delimit and diagnose cryptic species reliably. This study applied a fully integrative systematic framework to 24 nominally described butterfly species from four families (Nymphalidae, Lycaenidae, Pieridae, Papilionidae) suspected of harbouring cryptic diversity based on preliminary molecular screening, assembling data for 847 specimens from 184 collection localities across Europe and the Mediterranean basin. COI barcoding identified 47 candidate cryptic lineages across the 24 focal taxa -- a 95.8% increase in apparent species number. Geometric morphometric analysis of wing shape (38 landmarks; dorsal forewing) confirmed significant shape differences between 38 of 47 candidate pairs (80.9%), genitalic dissection confirmed reproductive isolation criteria in 31 of 38 (81.6%), and ecological niche modelling demonstrated significantly non-overlapping niches in 28 of 31 (90.3%). Applying conservative species delimitation criteria requiring three lines of evidence, 24 new species are formally described, raising the known European butterfly fauna by 5.4% in a single study.
