English Language Editing

When language editing is required

Editors assess the quality of the writing at initial screening and during peer review. Language editing is requested when unclear phrasing, grammatical errors or awkward construction would make the work hard for readers to follow.

Language editing fee

Where the journal requires language editing, a fee of $179 USD applies, in addition to the standard Article Processing Charge. It covers professional editing for grammar, clarity and readability only.

What language editing does not cover

Language editing deals only with clarity of expression. It does not:

  • replace peer review of the science or the methods;
  • check the accuracy of the data or the statistics;
  • guarantee that the manuscript will be accepted.

An edited manuscript still goes through full double-blind peer review and is judged on its scientific merit. The scientific content remains the authors' responsibility.

Author options

Authors may have their manuscript professionally edited before submission, using a service of their own choice, so that it meets the journal's standard at initial screening. In that case the journal's editing fee does not apply.

Independence from editorial decisions

A request for language editing has no bearing on the scientific evaluation, the outcome of peer review or the decision on acceptance.
